Welcome to the Algonkian Talking Phrasebook
This website is an online learning tool designed to introduce the Algonkian language once spoken by native communities in Southern New England and Eastern Long Island. It contains an expansive list of common words and phrases. These phrases are compiled from the work of students and teachers associated with the Algonquian Long Island Revitalization Project (ALRP).
Like English, there are several ways to construct Algonkian sentences in terms of word order and the use of the parts of speech. The phrases included here are single examples. There were dialectical variations among the given tribal groups, but these phrases were mutually understandable over a wide area of Southern New England and Eastern Long Island.
